Allie Krumper '18
Alumna's HDFS degree introduced her to a career path in recruiting and talent acquisition
Allie Krumper is a 2018 graduate of Human Development and Family Studies and currently lives in New York City. She is a talent acquisition manager and enjoys healthy eating and cooking, and cycling. Her HDFS degree led her to a career in recruiting and talent acquisition at a high-frequency trading firm, where she has now worked for four years. Allie says she never saw herself working in this type of job before graduation, but that her degree in HDFS introduced her to the possibility. The work in her role varies, and she has many different responsibilities.
I think the diversity that Penn State brings is wonderful and crucial, and has helped me well beyond my years at college to remain open-minded, empathetic, and cognizant of people’s differences.

“I work on recruiting engineering positions for the core engineering division (for example, hiring software developers, systems engineers, data center engineers, etc.). I also lead the firm’s on-campus recruiting efforts and collaborate with a global team to assist with other talent acquisition ad-hoc projects that arise throughout the year.”
As a graduate living in New York City, she says that the Penn State community is still tight-knit and “strangers will still say ‘We are!’ in passing."
During her time as a student at Penn State, Allie wasn’t sure how she was going to enter her professional career, and in what ways she would help others.
“There’s nothing wrong with taking some time to figure out your first job, despite the pressure you may feel from others to start your job search six months to a year in advance. I started looking for my first position a couple of weeks before graduation,” Allie said.
There are so many ways to utilize the skills learned in an HDFS degree and enter the helping field, but Allie wasn’t sure where she fit in. She ended up finding a recruiting agency on LinkedIn, and they helped her by sharing her resume with many companies and organizing interviews. Allie’s top job-seeking tip is that headhunters are very helpful!
In reflecting on her time at Penn State, Allie said “coming from a small town with just over 5,000 people, Penn State thoroughly broadened my world view. I think the diversity that Penn State brings is wonderful and crucial, and has helped me well beyond my years at college to remain open-minded, empathetic, and cognizant of people’s differences.”
