HDFS led Kevin Larmour '18 to people-focused career as school psychologist

This month’s spotlight features Kevin Larmour, a 2018 graduate of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) with a minor in psychology, who is now working in the field as a school psychologist. Kevin has been engaged in advocating and supporting people in a variety of human service positions since beginning at Penn State.

Throughout his college career, Kevin gained experience advocating for people as a patient escort with Jeanes Hospital, coordinating with hospital staff and communicating with patients to assure their well-being. In his senior year, he continued in a human service-focused field when he interned at the State College Friends School, supporting 3rd- and 4th-grade students by creating strategies to solve educational obstacles.

"HDFS is a great springboard for countless careers. Despite the ever-increasing digital focus of our world, I have found the ability to work well with people remains central to success across various career fields.”

Through this work, a passion for creative problem solving to support students spurred Kevin to continue his education, going to graduate school at Temple University to become a school psychologist. He earned an education specialist degree this past summer and began working as a school psychologist at New Foundations Charter School in Philadelphia.

In this role, he works closely with students, parents, and school teams to facilitate support for individual students, groups of students, and schoolwide prevention and intervention. His wide range of responsibilities in his new position also includes evaluating students using a variety of cognitive, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional assessments to determine necessary interventions, supports, and services.

Kevin enjoys snowboarding, coaching and playing soccer, and experiencing nature in his free time. As an undergraduate, Kevin has fond memories of his junior year when Penn state beat Ohio State and students poured into the streets to celebrate. He advises students to “take as much time as you need to consider and feel out career paths. HDFS is a great springboard for countless careers. Despite the ever-increasing digital focus of our world, I have found the ability to work well with people remains central to success across various career fields.”
